Artist Statement

Red Photo Station is an immersive installation that reimagines the traditional Chinese photo stage through a contemporary, sustainable lens. Framed by two iconic lion heads—symbols of protection, courage, and cultural pride—the work creates a bold visual gateway that invites viewers to step into a space where heritage and renewal meet. Constructed from recycled and up-cycled materials, the installation echoes the ethos of the Up-Cycle Art Museum and the 2025 Chengdu festival, where artists gather to transform discarded objects into meaningful works of art.

Measuring 600 x 230 x 280 cm, the structure stands as both a sculptural landmark and a participatory environment. The vivid red palette references auspiciousness and celebration in Chinese culture, while the lion heads anchor the work in traditional craftsmanship. Yet the installation transcends nostalgia: it reinterprets the photo station as a place of community interaction, memory-making, and playful engagement.

By merging mixed media, cultural symbols, and sustainable materials, Red Photo Station highlights themes of transformation and resilience. In Chengdu—a city renowned for its dynamic blend of heritage and modernity—the installation serves as a living stage where visitors can reflect on identity, creativity, and the transformative power of reuse. It celebrates the festival’s spirit of innovation while honouring the enduring strength of Chinese cultural motifs.
