Artist Statement
In “Iranian 19th century”, my visual journey explores the multifaceted dimensions of Iranian men’s lives during the Qajar period. Using collage techniques with a contemporary vision, this collection sheds light on the diverse experiences and societal roles that defined men in 19th-century Iran, such as their roles as rulers, warriors, and scholars, and their experiences in love, war, and intellectual pursuits.
The Qajar era, marked by a dynamic interplay of tradition, political change, and cultural transformation, provides the backdrop for this exploration. Through collage, I weave together historical imagery, creating rich and layered narratives that capture the intricacies of Iranian men’s lives during this pivotal time, inviting you to delve deeper into the collection.
Collage, with its ability to juxtapose and layer different elements, serves as a powerful metaphor for the complex and multifaceted identities and roles of men in 19th-century Iranian society. This technique allows me to illuminate the nuanced aspects of their experiences, offering a more profound understanding beyond stereotypical depictions.
By infusing a contemporary vision into this historical exploration, I bridge the past and present, creating a connection that prompts viewers to engage with the struggles and aspirations of Qajar-era men. This collection not only recontextualizes history but also invites a broader conversation about masculinity, identity, and the ongoing impact of historical experiences on contemporary perspectives.
