Artist Statement
In this series, I undertake an artistic exploration that reveals the intricacies of the lives and challenges faced by Iranian women during the Qajar period. This collection, uniquely employing collage techniques and a contemporary perspective, seeks to reanimate the voices of women whose stories have been largely muted by time.
The Qajar era in Iran, spanning the 19th Century, was marked by a complex interplay of tradition, socio-political changes, and cultural shifts. Against this backdrop, women grappled with many issues, from societal expectations to evolving gender roles. “Iranian Women 19th Century” serves as a visual testimony to their struggles, triumphs, and the resilience exhibited in navigating a society transforming.
As a medium, collage offers a dynamic and layered approach to storytelling. By melding diverse visual elements, I construct a narrative that captures the multiplicity of experiences and challenges faced by Iranian women in the 19th Century. The deliberate use of contemporary vision serves as a bridge, connecting the historical struggles of these women with the ongoing discourse on gender equity and identity in our present times.
Through amalgamating historical imagery and contemporary aesthetics, this collection challenges conventional narratives and stereotypes associated with women in the Qajar period. It invites viewers to confront preconceptions, fostering a deeper understanding of women’s diverse role in shaping their destinies despite their time constraints.
“Iranian Women 19th Century” is not merely an artistic endeavour but a conscious act of historical reclamation. By presenting these narratives through a contemporary lens, I aim to underscore their continued relevance in shaping our understanding of gender dynamics, empowerment, and the ongoing struggle for equality. As viewers interact with this collection, I encourage them to reflect on the resilience of Iranian women in the 19th Century and recognise their experiences’ enduring impact on the evolving narrative of women’s rights and empowerment in the broader context of Iranian history.
