Artist Statement
In my art collection titled “Ephemeral Blossoms”, I take viewers on a visual journey through the intricate tapestry of Japanese women’s lives in the 19th century. Using a modern approach, I transfer historical photographs onto canvas, incorporating photo-collage and painting techniques to bring contemporary life into the images of these women, capturing the essence of their fleeting moments. This collection serves as a tribute to the timeless beauty and resilience of Japanese women during this critical era.
Reflecting the delicate nature of existence, much like the fleeting cherry blossoms that symbolize the transience of life in Japanese culture, “Ephemeral Blossoms” becomes a visual metaphor for these women’s impactful stories, inviting admiration and respect for their strength and beauty.
My aim is to capture not just the external beauty of these women but also the strength and resilience that defined their lives. Each brushstroke and collage element contributes to a narrative beyond aesthetics, inviting viewers to engage with the individual stories and collective spirit of Japanese women during this transformative period, sparking their curiosity about women’s lives and the deeper meaning behind the collection.
The collection explores the intersection between tradition and modernity, inviting contemplative reflection on the delicate yet indomitable nature of the women who shaped Japan’s history during this pivotal era, and encourages viewers to ponder the resilience and beauty of these women and how their stories continue to inspire us today.
Note: The photo media used in this collection is original and comes from a personal collection of 19th-century Japan, including my own paintings. This provides a unique and authentic perspective on the lives of Japanese women during this pivotal era.
